HTC and other independent telephone companies and cooperatives are the owners of Spirit Telecom. Spirit Telecom began serving South Carolinians with long-distance, paging, and private line services in 1993. Initially serving the independent telephone and cooperatives of South Carolina, Spirit has expanded its retail operation into North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida with the capability to provide wholesale services nationwide.

In 1994, Spirit began offering wholesale Internet services to the independent telephone and cooperatives of the Palmetto State. The service has expanded to a nationwide wholesale provider on Internet, Technical Support, Web Hosting, Domain Registration and Portal Development.

Spirit Telecom Broadband & Networks opened in 1996 offering one of the first Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks in South Carolina and Western North Carolina, providing customized data, voice, Internet and video networks for businesses and governments in the Southeast and Midwest.

Today, Spirit Telecom employs more than 250 experienced professionals to serve the needs of commercial and residential customers throughout the southeast United States
